Rhine Cruise to Switzerland

Day 1 BREISACH

Selected early morning coach pick-up and journey to Dover/Folkestone for the 7.00am ferry/Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. Alternatively, we offer overnight hotel accommodation close to port for those who would prefer. Our coach then continues to Germany where you will join MS Britannia in Breisach. After an included three-course evening meal on board, we remain berthed here overnight.

Those taking the air option will fly direct from the UK and transfer to the vessel.

*Passengers taking the overnight crossing from the north of England or Scotland, will depart the previous day and join the vessel on day 1 for dinner.

Day 2 BREISACH, BASLE

After breakfast, we cruise to Basle, the cultural heart of Switzerland. This attractive university town has a unique location on the borders of three countries: France, Germany and Switzerland, and these influences are reflected by contrasting architectural styles and a range of fascinating museums, and the terrific cuisine, wines and beers.

After lunch on board, we offer an included orientation tour of Basle, followed by time at leisure. Be sure to explore the perfectly preserved old town where you’ll discover the impressive Cathedral, historic Town Hall and traditional market place.

After your evening meal on board, perhaps explore the town by night and enjoy a drink at one of the many fashionable bars here.

Day 3 BASLE

Today, you will have a full day at leisure in Basle, but we’re sure you’ll want to take advantage of our unmissable optional grand Switzerland tour, taking you on a breathtaking tour of the Bernese Oberland, one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Europe. You’ll travel through picturesque alpine scenery, over the Brünig Pass and along Lake Brienz, to the world-famous resort of Interlaken. In the afternoon, visit the world-renowned glacier village of Grindelwald, where there will be the opportunity to take a ride by chair lift for unparalleled views.

There will also be a visit to the beautiful Lake of the Four Forest Cantons, Lake Lucerne, famed for stylish shops and historic buildings.

Day 4 BASLE, BREISACH

After breakfast, our vessel will be cruising from Switzerland to Germany, calling at Breisach on the very edge of the Black Forest. No visit to this enchanting region would be complete without joining our fascinating optional Black Forest panorama tour.

From Breisach this unmissable tour will take you past the Feldberg, the highest point in the Forest, to a clock factory which houses one of the largest cuckoo clocks in the world. You will also experience the best of the Black Forest scenery, taking in enchanting wooded valleys full of traditional houses and farms.

Day 5 BREISACH, STRASBOURG

This morning we cruise to the French city of Strasbourg for an included orientation tour and time at leisure. This fascinating city is rich with historic monuments, museums and architecture, with highlights including the magnificent cathedral and Petite France, Strasbourg’s remarkable old town.

Day 6 STRASBOUTG, SPEYER

Depart Strasbourg and sail to the lovely town of Speyer, renowned for its medieval cathedral. From here you can join an optional excursion to the University city of Heidelberg.

Famed for its pink sandstone castle, this lovely city is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Germany. Its picturesque setting surrounded by mountains, forest and vineyards has long been an inspiration to famous artists.

Day 7 SPEYER, RÜDESHEIM

Cruise downstream to the delightful Rhine wine village of Rüdesheim. After dinner, round off a great day by joining our optional wine tasting & Siegfried’s Mechanical Musik Kabinett excursion.

You’ll be transferred by land train to an excellent wine cellar in Rüdesheim in order to sample the local product, followed by a visit to Siegfried’s Musik Kabinett where you can see the remarkable collection of mechanical instruments.

Day 8 RÜDESHEIM, KOBLENZ

This morning, as you are enjoying breakfast, we will be making our way down the mighty Rhine to the fascinating medieval town of Koblenz.

From here, join our optional excursion to Cochem & the magical Moselle Valley, one of the highlights being a visit to the delightful township of Cochem, famed for its unique position beneath the Reichsburg Castle and bustling market place. This excursion also includes an enchanting journey through breathtaking scenery, taking in delightful locations such as Beilstein, a medieval town with crooked passages and charming buildings.

Day 9 KOBLENZ

After breakfast we must bid farewell and journey to Calais for the 5.30pm crossing to Dover/Folkestone. From here you will be returned to your original pickup point.

Those taking the air option will transfer directly to the airport for the return flight to the UK. *Passengers returning on the overnight crossing to the north of England or Scotland, will transfer to the departure port and arrive in the UK the next day.

On alternate dates the holiday itinerary operates in reverse, as follows:

Day 1: UK, Andernach
Day 2: Andernach, Koblenz
Day 3: Koblenz, Rüdesheim
Day 4: Rüdesheim, Mannheim, Speyer
Day 5: Speyer, Rastatt, Strasbourg
Day 6: Strasbourg, Breisach
Day 7: Breisach, Basle
Day 8: Basle, Breisach
Day 9: Breisach, UK

The excursions available at each destination are exactly the same as those featured in the standard holiday itinerary. Your actual itinerary will be confirmed with your final travel documents.
