We start with a drive along the German Pier ‘Bryggen’, continuing past the 700-year-old Håakon’s Hall. The Rosenkrantz Tower was erected in the 13th Century and reconstructed in the 1560s by the governor of Bergen Castle. Continuing through the city centre, pass a number of important buildings and monuments. On our return, we shall make a stop at the fish and flower market close to the harbour.
|
Drive past the fortress of Bergenhus along the Bryggen. We will walk through small alleyways and learn about the unique architecture and history. Our next stop is at the funicular station. Taking us safely up to 320 meters above sea level, we will see beautiful views of the city and the surrounding mountains and sea. On our return, we’ll make a stop close to the famous fish and flower market.
|
Leave Ulvik and drive alongside the Osafjord to the small hamlet of Osa. A winding road takes us through spectacular wild mountain scenery. Descend to Osa, stopping to see the Stream Nest, a sculpture by the Japanese artist Takamasa Kuniyasu, There will be time for a short walk and to take photographs before returning to Ulvik, where we will see gardens of the Horticultural College; the tour ends at Brakanes Hotel.
|
Driving through the village of Eidfjord before continuing through the steep Måbødalen Valley. This road will take us to the enormous Hardanger Plateau, where we will find Norway’s largest National Park. We will make a stop at the Vøringsfossen Waterfall, one of Norway’s most famous waterfalls. The Hardangervidda Nature and Wildlife Centre will be our next stop. Before returning to Eidfjord, visiting the Sysen Dam en route.

Enjoy a short walk to the railway station, where we board the train. Climbing a valley, the train crosses back and forth across rivers and tunnels. Change trains at Myrdal Station, continuing to the town of Voss. Here, enjoy a splendid Norwegian Smorgasbord (buffet lunch), before continuing the tour by coach. We make a short stop at the beautiful Tvindefossen waterfall. We make our last stop at Hopperstad Stave Church.
Surrounded by seven mountains, the delightful old Hanseatic port of Bergen is renowned as ‘The Gateway to the Fjords’. It has a special place in Norwegian hearts and presents a unique and colourful mixture of charm and culture. Bryggen, the old wharf area with its wooden houses and painted gables, is an example of medieval architecture unsurpassed elsewhere in Scandinavia. During your time here, you might like to take a ride on the Funicular railway.
As we make our way towards Ulvik, you will be cruising into some of Norway’s most dramatic coastal waters, lined with idyllic coves and weather beaten cliffs, winding inland to the spectacular Hardangerfjord. You will be taken by boat to this peaceful little village, known as ‘The Flower of the Hardangerfjord’. The village offers an old-world charm and you can sit and enjoy the peaceful lapping of the clear waters. You might also like to enjoy a glass of the refreshing local beer, some heady aquavit or even one of those tempting Norwegian pastries.
The pretty village of Eidfjord is situated at the top of the Hardangerfjord, against a unique backdrop of sand and gravel terraces, which were left behind when the ice melted some 9000 years ago. Today, the plentiful supply of water and the fast-flowing rivers tumbling down the hillsides make this area ideal for the production of hydro-electric power.
As your vessel gently cruises the mighty Sognefjord, celebrated as the country’s longest and deepest fjord, we will approach the tiny Norwegian town of Flåm. Here you can join our famous Norway in a nutshell tour. Take a journey on the Flåm Mountain Railway and embark on a 12-mile 3,000-foot climb, plunging through tunnels and zigzagging between mountaintops, before finally emerging at lofty Myrdal. The train travels slowly and even stops at some of the finest views to ensure you experience the full impact of this wild and beautiful region. On reaching the mountain plateau you can change trains and continue to Voss, well known for its 13th century stave church. Those who choose not to join the optional Norway in a Nutshell excursion from Flåm will cruise on to Vik or Gudvangen, as stated.
