Bergen

Introduction to Bergen

We start with a drive along the German Pier ‘Bryggen’, continuing past the 700-year-old Håakon’s Hall. The Rosenkrantz Tower was erected in the 13th Century and reconstructed in the 1560s by the governor of Bergen Castle. Continuing through the city centre, pass a number of important buildings and monuments. On our return, we shall make a stop at the fish and flower market close to the harbour.

City tour with Bryggen & Mt. Fløien Funicular

Drive past the fortress of Bergenhus along the Bryggen. We will walk through small alleyways and learn about the unique architecture and history. Our next stop is at the funicular station. Taking us safely up to 320 meters above sea level, we will see beautiful views of the city and the surrounding mountains and sea. On our return, we’ll make a stop close to the famous fish and flower market.

See the beauty of the Geirangerfjord with its towering mountains. Travel along the shores of the Olden Lake and Olden River. On foot you will be able to reach the Briksdal Glacier, an offshoot of the Jostedal Glacier. After an included lunch drive alongside emerald Lake Stryn and climb to Mount Dalsnibba for a breathtaking view of Geiranger.

See the beauty of the Geirangerfjord with its towering mountains. Travel along the shores of the Olden Lake and Olden River before the road ends at the Briksdal Mountain Lodge. On foot via a path that is rocky in parts you will be able to reach the Briksdal Glacier, an offshoot of the Jostedal Glacier. Includes refreshments.

Enjoy a short walk to the railway station, where we board the train. Climbing a valley, the train crosses back and forth across rivers and tunnels. Change trains at Myrdal Station, continuing to the town of Voss. Here, enjoy a splendid Norwegian Smorgasbord (buffet lunch), before continuing the tour by coach. We make a short stop at the beautiful Tvindefossen waterfall. We make our last stop at Hopperstad Stave Church.

Anchor in the Nærøyfjord, disembarking by tenders. Coaches take us through the Nærøydalen Valley before arriving at Stalheim Hotel. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a Danish pastry. Descending from Stalheim towards Gudvangen you will experience the old mountain road, called Stalheimskleivi. On arrival in Gudvangen there will a short amount of time to look in the tourist shop before taking tenders back to the ship.

Stavanger

Stavanger’s Highlights

Drive through the harbour area for a sightseeing tour of Stavanger. En route, the coaches pass Hafrsfjord; where a historic sea battle was fought. A visit will be made to a reconstructed farm from the Iron Age, and on our return we pass the Ledaal Manor. On arriving back, we shall visit the Cathedral. Our tour ends with a walk through the old part of Stavanger.

Cruising in Lysefjord

Our cruise takes us through an area full of small idyllic islands. We continue to Lysefjord, home to the Pulpit Rock just over 1,500 feet over the sea; cruising directly under it. We then make a stop at the picturesque beach at Helleren where coffee, tea and waffles are served. Cruising back to Stavanger, enjoy a splendid view of the city before arriving at the harbour.

Surrounded by seven mountains, the delightful old Hanseatic port of Bergen is renowned as ‘The Gateway to the Fjords’. It has a special place in Norwegian hearts and presents a unique and colourful mixture of charm and culture. Bryggen, the old wharf area with its wooden houses and painted gables, is an example of medieval architecture unsurpassed elsewhere in Scandinavia. During your time here, you might like to take a ride on the Funicular railway.

After cruising the awe-inspiring Geirangerfjord, you will arrive at the peaceful waterside town of Hellesylt. From here you will have the chance to join a full day optional overland shore excursion to Geiranger, passing Mount Dalsnibba.

Those who decide not to join the overland excursion from Hellesylt will stay on board and cruise along the spectacular Geirangerfjord to Geiranger. Upon arrival you will have time at leisure to enjoy stunning views of cascading waterfalls, glistening streams, towering cliffs and tiny hill farms which surround the village.

Olden

Located at the head of three valleys amid the sublimely peaceful surroundings of the Inner Nordfjord, the pretty timbered village of Olden is a gateway to the spectacular ice wilderness of stunning dimensions. From here you can enjoy views of the giant Jostedal glacier, the world’s second largest icefield, and perhaps climb an amazing zig-zag road past towering cliffs and tumbling waterfalls to the giant Briksdal glacier, best-known of the Jostedal’s many icy arms. .

Flåm, Norway

As your vessel gently cruises the mighty Sognefjord, celebrated as the country’s longest and deepest fjord, we will approach the tiny Norwegian town of Flåm. Here you can join our famous Norway in a nutshell tour. Take a journey on the Flåm Mountain Railway and embark on a 12-mile 3,000-foot climb, plunging through tunnels and zigzagging between mountaintops, before finally emerging at lofty Myrdal. The train travels slowly and even stops at some of the finest views to ensure you experience the full impact of this wild and beautiful region. On reaching the mountain plateau you can change trains and continue to Voss, well known for its 13th century stave church. Those who choose not to join the optional Norway in a Nutshell excursion from Flåm will cruise on to Vik or Gudvangen, as stated.

Dwarfed by spectacular towering mountains, which reach heights of 5,500 feet, Gudvangen is wonderfully situated on the delightful Næroyfjord, believed to be the narrowest fjord in the world.

Stavanger

The medieval city of Stavanger is known as the oil capital of Norway and offers a charming combination of old and new. Explore the quaint narrow lanes and you’ll discover traditional white-timber houses and a stone church dating back to the 12th century, while the modern area of the city boasts a wide variety of shops, open-air cafes and cosmopolitan restaurants; all set against a stunning backdrop of natural fjord and mountain scenery.

Special Note

3rd and 4th persons occupying a cabin
In addition to our designated three and four berth cabins, we have arranged for the third and fourth berths in higher grade cabins to be sold for an incredible price. If you book a twin bed outside cabin of Grade 6 or above, a third person can occupy your cabin for a great-value price(upper-berth). In a Grade 5 cabin and above, a third and a fourth person can join for the entire duration of the cruise for an excellent price! (Please note that this does not apply to Grade 4 cabins.)

Please note:

  • Inside cabins rely on artificial light
  • Outside cabins have a porthole (deck 4), window (deck 5 and above)
  • The term berth refers to an upper and lower bunk style bed
  • The upper berth is accessed via a small ladder
  • Two bedded cabins have two lower beds
  • Some two bedded cabins have additional fold-away upper berths which are not used when the cabin is occupied by two passengers
  • Third and fourth passengers sharing cabins are always accommodated in upper berths
  • All cabins are non-smoking
